The IGT comes from Tsubame-Sanjo, a pair of towns in Niigata that have worked metal for four hundred years. Today the region has thousands of workshops, and Tsubame flatware has been used at the Nobel Banquet since 1991.

A table built on a rule
Snow Peak designs around the Comfort Standard — 快適基準寸法, “numbers made necessary by the pursuit of comfort.” The IGT extends that idea from height to surface: a fixed unit of 250 × 360 mm that everything fits into.
An unofficial standard
Snow Peak never published an IGT specification. The unit size simply spread: other makers measured Snow Peak’s own bamboo insert and built to it. In Japan the result is called the IGT規格 — the IGT standard — and third-party parts that drop in perfectly are a “Cinderella fit.”
Noasobi
Snow Peak’s word for what all this is for is 野遊び, noasobi — “playing in the field.” Waking with the sun on your face; stories around the fire.
Timeline
1620sFloods of the Shinano River ruin the rice fields around Sanjo. Blacksmiths from Edo teach farmers to forge 和釘 (wakugi), Japanese nails. Within decades, over a thousand households are working metal.
1958Yukio Yamai, a keen climber, opens a hardware business in Sanjo and soon starts making the climbing gear he can’t find.
1963The name “Snow Peak” is registered as a trademark.
1987The Multi Stand is released. Its 660 mm height becomes the Comfort Standard — table heights set as rules.
1989A connection point is added to the Multi Stand. Stands can now join into longer tables — the building block of the IGT.
1996The Takibi fire pit launches as campgrounds begin banning open fires.
2003The IGT Frame Long wins Japan’s Good Design Award, the earliest dated record of the Iron Grill Table.
2014The Jikaro fireside table joins the family and connects to IGT frames.
2017IGT Slim and the cast-iron Grill Burner arrive.
2021The Flat Burner is updated to the GS-450R; the Extension IGT slides open to reveal unit slots.
2022–23Table Top Architect clamps add lanterns and shelves. One Japanese blog counts 43 IGT-compatible tables from other brands.
2024Collapsible (Separate) IGT frames launch after a six-month delay, and a renewed, lighter Entry IGT arrives.
